Your Ghana Market Entry Checklist

Work through each phase before committing to your next step.

PHASE 1

Market Feasibility

  • Confirm demand for your product/service exists in Ghana (primary or secondary research)
  • Identify your target customer segment and their purchasing power
  • Assess the competitive landscape — local and regional players
  • Understand import duties, tariffs, or licensing requirements for your sector
  • Review Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) minimum capital requirements if applicable
  • Evaluate currency risk: USD/GHS exchange rate exposure on revenues and costs
PHASE 2

Legal & Regulatory Setup

  • Choose your business structure: Limited Liability Company, branch office, or partnership
  • Register with the Registrar General's Department (RGD)
  • Obtain Tax Identification Number (TIN) from the Ghana Revenue Authority
  • Register for VAT if annual turnover will exceed GHS 200,000
  • Apply for relevant sector licences (FDA, Bank of Ghana, NCA, etc.) if required
  • Open a local bank account — shortlist at least two banks with SME divisions
  • Draft shareholder agreements and director appointment documents
PHASE 3

Operations & Finances

  • Secure office or commercial space — decide on Accra, Kumasi, or regional base
  • Set up payroll and understand SSNIT (Social Security) obligations for employees
  • Establish accounting systems compliant with Ghana reporting standards
  • Set up a payment collection method (mobile money, card, bank transfer)
  • Budget for 6–12 months of operating costs before expecting significant revenue
  • Understand repatriation rules if you plan to send profits abroad
PHASE 4

Go-to-Market

  • Define your pricing strategy adjusted for local market conditions
  • Identify distribution channels — online, retail, B2B, partnerships
  • Build local relationships: industry associations, chambers of commerce
  • Establish a digital presence (website, Google Business Profile, social media)
  • Identify 3–5 potential early customers or pilot partners
  • Plan a soft launch or pilot phase before full-scale rollout
PHASE 5

Risk & Contingency

  • Document key risks (currency, regulatory, political, operational) and mitigation plans
  • Secure appropriate business insurance coverage
  • Have a trusted local advisor or legal counsel on retainer
  • Set clear milestones for your first 90 days, 6 months, and 12 months
  • Define your exit or pivot criteria if market conditions change
